DEEPER THAN DEPTHS

2020
Porcelain

In each of these 5 wall pieces, the defining feature takes up less than a tenth of its entire composition. It is the small sliver of gradient that comes to the surface only after a leap of faith is taken in destroying its symmetry with angled cuts.

The gradients are not apparent from far, so the work invites audiences to take a step closer, lean deeper to find out what makes this work special.

Shadows play an important role in enhancing these gradients. The work incorporates the lighting of the space around it and makes full use of the fact that it is a wall piece.

This quality sets it apart from most traditional ceramic pieces, which rarely consider these inalienable spatial elements.

This work debuted in To Return From Sojourn, my first solo exhibition back in Singapore after half a decade of splitting the seasons between Singapore, my childhood home, and Taiwan, the birthplace of my studio practice. The exhibition features 4 works, each focusing on a different visual element. As its name suggests, Deeper than Depths features the element of depth.
