惑 (UNBLUED)

2018
Porcelain

Unblued was created during a transitory period when I was constantly between Taiwan and Singapore. It represents the discomfort of growth that stems from the need to constantly adapt to a changing environment.

Being a foreigner in a foreign land, and also increasingly a foreigner in my own homeland, stirred a sense of displacement and unease within me. By channeling my experience into this work, I see and understand myself better.

Visually, the combination of geometric and organic forms demonstrate the tension of growth at different stages and times. The various shades of blue also mark the range of emotions from discomfort and anxiety, to calm and at peace.

Interiorly, subtle gradients and contours mimic how tree rings record time and growth. The marbling of porcelain slip also represent the stirring emotions we contend with internally from time to time.
